About the Artist

My name is Carlos Rodrigues. I was born in Luxembourg to Portuguese parents, and I am 49 years old. I am self-taught and have never followed any formal artistic training. My entire professional life was in administration, including a few years as a travel agent. Art was never a hobby or a goal… until now.

In my late thirties, I began to notice that something was wrong with my body. After several years of uncertainty, I was diagnosed with a congenital neuromuscular disease. My condition is progressive: the muscles in my arms and shoulders are slowly degenerating, and each gesture becomes more difficult over time. My body is fragile, and time has become something very concrete in my life.

Photography came first, quietly. At first in color, then in black and white. Portraits, abstraction, reduction. Looking back, I realize this period was a silent preparation: learning to see less, to remove, to focus on what truly remains.

LineFragment is my first artistic project. It was born from this relationship with the body, with time, and with limitation. It is a bold project—but above all, a necessary one.

The Project

LineFragment is a series of 1,000 artworks. Each piece measures 10 × 10 cm, created on a wooden panel with a white surface. A single black line is drawn by hand, abstract and continuous.

Each artwork exists on its own, yet is inseparable from the others. Together, the 1,000 fragments form a single continuous line. Placed end to end, it would measure 100 meters.

Each fragment is created in one uninterrupted gesture, without correction, guided only by my body. Once completed, it is numbered, signed LineFragment, photographed, and documented. It is then published on Instagram and on the official website.

The fragment number corresponds exactly to its price: fragment 1 = €1, fragment 500 = €500, fragment 1000 = €1,000. The total value of the complete series is €500,500.

Why

For me, each artwork is a fragment of time. Proof that a moment existed. The buyer does not acquire a painting, but a certified fragment of a larger, ongoing work.

Each fragment connects its owner to 999 others, across countries and time zones. A discreet network, linked by a single line.

LineFragment is not about producing objects. It is a way of leaving a trace, as long as my body allows it.

“I do not sell paintings. I sell fragments of a continuous work, created in the moment.”
